What
is the current status of restoration at the Athens Theatre?
The
current phase began in November 2005 and continues wall and metal
framing, including framing to rebuild the stage sub-floor; completion
of balcony framing; work on the storm drainage system, concrete
/ masonry work on stairs and landings and at main floor level, with
necessary demolition work and repair to the building's exterior
to maintain weather and waterproof protection.
Excavation began
to build the emergency exit from the basement level on the south
side of the building, including site work to improve drainage around
the building. Work on the interior of the building is less noticeable,
but no less important. Electrical conduit was run to accommodate
the extensive amount of electric equipment that will be installed.
The former stage, which was determined to be structurally unsound,
was demolished and a substantial stage was built to replace it.
| In
addition, the following items were finished or well underway
by Fall of 2006:
- The
stair well on the south side of the building was substantially
completed, with the roof dried in and the doorway cut through
to the understage area.
- The
underground drainage will be completed and ready for the
tie in to the city drainage system.
- The
metal framing will be completed, including the Green Room
area, the technical and lighting booths, the restrooms and
all exposed exterior masonry walls.
- The
stage joists and subfloor are now complete.
- The
orchestra pit and orchestra level seating area are now covered
with scaffolding allowing the mechanical contractors to
operate “high lift” vehicles and work above
the ceiling level.

Therefore, if
progress is uninterrupted, we expect to see rather dramatic changes
outside as well as inside the building in the next few months.
The
next phase of construction includes interior/exterior structural
elements that will bring the project to the beginning of the finishing
phase. This includes remaining structural steel and steel fireproofing,
interior door frames, drywall necessary to complete fire walls,
HVAC elements and completion of the conveying systems as related
to the hydraulic orchestra pit and wheelchair lifts (providing backstage
access to physically challenged performers and visitors). Installation
of theatrical lighting and interior electrical elements, preliminary
technical equipment necessary to the business of the performing
arts, including rigging, sound and projection systems rounds out
this phase of construction.
The
final phase will include remaining interior finishes, carpets, curtains
and drapes and the installation of technical equipment - including
projection, lighting and sound systems.
